Scoliosis is the medical name for an abnormal lateral (side-to-side) curvature of the spine, which your Grand Rapids chiropractor is highly experienced in treating. Your chiropractor wants you to be aware that there is a major difference between bad posture and the condition referred to as scoliosis. Bad posture is easily correctable, while scoliosis, an abnormal lateral curvature of the spine, is significantly more difficult to affect.

Even before your appointment with your chiropractor in Grand Rapids, there are quite a few ways for you to see the difference between poor posture and scoliosis. If you were to study an individual with scoliosis in a standing position, you would probably notice that one shoulder is higher than the other, and that the scapula (shoulder blade) is raised or more prominent. You probably would notice a larger space between the arm and the body on one side if the person’s arms were dangling loosely at his or her sides. Moreover, one hip might higher or more conspicuous than the other. And one more clue might be that the head will not be in plumb with the pelvis.

Scoliosis symptoms can be mild; but, if the curve and rib rotation are severe enough, both pulmonary and cardiac functions can be restricted. The cause of scoliosis in 85 percent of cases is unknown. This type of scoliosis (Idiopathic) is thought to be genetic, or to minimally have a genetic component because it tends to run in families.

Idiopathic Scoliosis generally develops during adolescence when the body is completing its final major growth spurt. Most frequently girls develop this type of scoliosis. A scoliotic curve, if found, should be monitored for any progression. Your chiropractor in Grand Rapids will not only provide periodic examinations, but will suggest standing x-rays if needed.

Because most scoliotic curvatures are mild to moderate, a brace is unnecessary. Therefore, regular chiropractic care, in these cases, is extremely helpful in both in decreasing and adjusting any compensatory musculoskeletal conditions that might happen.

Santa Barbara Chiropractor

You know what they say, “Growing old isn’t so bad when you consider the alternative.” But, if the aging process is causing you pain, you are painfully aware that aging is no joke! As a chiropractor in Santa Barbara, when it comes to musculoskeletal challenges, I see too many age-related breakdowns that probably would not have taken place if the original cause had been addressed earlier. Poor posture, improper gait, and repetitive overuse commonly create needless stress in the back, neck, hip, knees, and even the feet that can create painful conditions over time. If we only aware years ago how our aging body would feel today, eh? However, as they say, “hindsight is 20-20.”

back pain is at the top of the list as the most prevalent musculoskeletal problem to take place as we age. Back pain that is age-related is generally caused by spine osteoarthritis, or Spondylosis, a degenerative disorder.

Spinal osteoarthritis is caused by advanced erosion and weight-bearing pressure on the spine that, over the years, damages discs, joints, and surrounding ligaments. The location and degree of the degenerative process of spondylosis is individual, varying from person to person. It may affect the cervical (neck), thoracic (mid-back), or lumbar (low back) regions of the spine. Spondylosisi symptoms very from person to person and depend on the severity of the degeneration, and can extend from negligible pain and numbness to gross sensory loss and muscular atrophy.

Calcium is deposited in the tissues around the vertebrae due to repetitive stresses that negatively affect the cartilage around the joints Adjacent nerves, blood vessels, and soft tissue can be constricted by these calcific deposits, also called bone spurs. This particular of compression is at the root of Spondylosis.

Regular chiropractic treatment and overall chiropractic management is beneficial in significantly slowing age-related degeneration of the spine whether or not you are suffering from spondylosis. No, “you can’t un-ring a bell” or “turn back the hands of time,” but it’s never too late to give your spine the attention it deserves. Chiropractors are experts when it comes to treatment of the spine. See your Santa Barbara Chiropractor today, for the health of your spine.
